Abbey Wood Station is located on Wilton Road in Abbey Wood, SE2, within the London Borough of Greenwich. It sits in Travelcard Zone 4 and serves as the southeastern terminus of the Elizabeth line (Crossrail), one of Europe's most significant rail infrastructure projects, which opened fully through central London in May 2023.

Lesnes Abbey Woods — 0.3 miles

A spectacular 200-acre ancient woodland managed by the London Borough of Bexley. The woods contain the atmospheric ruins of Lesnes Abbey, founded in 1178 by Richard de Lucy as an act of penance following the murder of Thomas Becket. Free to enter year-round, the woods are renowned for their wild daffodil displays in spring and fossil beds containing Eocene-era shark teeth and shells. A wonderful escape within minutes of the station.

Crossness Pumping Station — 2.0 miles

One of the finest surviving examples of Victorian Gothic industrial architecture in the world. Designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette and opened in 1865, the ornate ironwork interior — nicknamed the “Victorian Cathedral” — is breathtaking. Open to the public on selected steaming weekends throughout the year. Advance booking recommended.

Thamesmead — 1.0 mile

The ambitious 1960s riverside housing development on the south bank of the Thames, famous as the filming location for Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971). The area is undergoing significant regeneration and includes parkland, lakes, and direct access to the Thames riverside path.

Woolwich Royal Arsenal — 2.5 miles (Elizabeth line, 1 stop)

A vast historic military complex dating back to the 17th century, now a major heritage and residential quarter. Home to the Royal Arsenal Riverside development and a riverside walk along the Thames. The nearby Woolwich Ferry provides a free river crossing to North Woolwich.

Bostall Heath and Woods — 1.2 miles

An attractive open heathland and woodland area in the London Borough of Bexley, offering pleasant walks with open views across south-east London. Popular with dog walkers and families, covering around 80 acres in total.

The Thames Path — 1.5 miles (via Thamesmead)

The long-distance walking route along the River Thames passes through Thamesmead, offering riverside walks east toward Erith and west toward Woolwich, with good views of the river and the industrial and natural landscapes of this stretch of the Thames.
